Any child that was found to have lice/nits should keep being combed until 3/24 (that'll make 2 weeks).

Lice were found in the following classes:
K-203, 1-324, 4-508, 5-504, 5-527 (all today) and 3-405 (last week)

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE check your child(ren)'s head(s) tonight AND on a regular basis!  A lice letter was sent home three weeks ago to a specific class (mentioned above) and today, 36% of the students from the same class were sent home with lice.

Lice letters serve as a reminder to check your own child.  Head checks with a lice comb are time consuming, but having lice itself is even worse...especially if you have more than one child at home!  Please do yourself a favor and conduct continuous head checks at home. Head checks by me do not guarantee a lice/nit-free head. If your child says that I checked their head at school and found nothing STILL check them. Please help keep PS 29 and your home bug-free.

Thank you,
Nurse Pumpkin

The NYC School Survey helps school leaders understand what key members of the school community say about the learning environment at each school.  The information captured by the survey is designed to support a dialogue among all members of the school community about how to make the school a better place to learn.

Every year, all PS 29 teachers and all PS 29 parents take the NYC School Survey.  The survey results provide insight into a school’s learning environment and a measure of diversification that goes beyond test scores on the Progress Report.  The survey questions assess the community’s opinions on academic expectations, communication, engagement, and safety and respect.  School leaders can use survey results to better understand their own school’s strengths and areas for targeted improvement.

Survey results are reported publicly through Survey Reports, a written document that summarizes survey results by question and category, and Survey Quest, an online tool that provides easy-to-read graphs that compare the school’s responses to the city’s responses.

A school’s NYC School Survey results count for 10% of the Progress Report.  To learn more about how the NYC School Survey is scored for general education schools, click here.

The Department of Education attempts to send only one parent survey per family.  However, if you receive surveys for siblings, please only complete one survey for PS 29.  The survey information is based on the experience of your older child at PS 29.

Please consider completing the survey online at www.nycparentsurvey.org.  At the site, please select \"Parent Survey\".  To log on, please use the 8-digit numeric code (no space when entered online) printed on the first and last page of your paper survey.  If you do not have access to a computer, please feel free to come to Room 133 to complete your online survey.  Please be sure to bring in your green envelope and its contents as well!

If you prefer to use the paper survey, please complete and return them in the pre-addressed, postage-paid envelopes provided by April 23, 2010.  This year, teachers will complete their own survey online.

Either way, the survey only takes a few minutes to complete and counts for 10% of the school’s Progress Report.  Please help us complete and submit the surveys at your earliest convenience.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Nina Chan Jalowayski or contact the Survey Team or call 212.374.6646.  Feel free to visit NYC School Survey for further information.  Thank you in advance.

For Pre-K Seats in 2010:

Every parent MUST submit their Pre-K Application directly through the Department of Education.  There are two ways to apply  - either online or by mail in paper form (booklets available at school 3/8/10).

Please be sure to copy either the online application or the paper application and return it to Maureen Monaco in the main office to attach to your child's paperwork.  This ensures that we have all the paperwork for siblings wishing to have a seat in Pre-K for 2010.  Thank you.

\"Epilepsy

About 300,000 American children under the age of 14 have epilepsy.  It affects children at different ages, and in different ways.  For some, it will be a temporary problem, easily controlled with medication, outgrown after a few years.  For others, it may be a lifelong challenge affecting many areas of life.
Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes seizures.  There are many different kinds of seizures.  Some cause a child to lose consciousness or “blank out.”  Others can cause shaking or convulsions.  All are caused by a sudden interruption in the brain's normal activity.  Seizures and epilepsy can create many challenges for a family, but with good treatment options and support, most children can live full and active lives.
Find out more about issues for children with epilepsy -- from education to safety -- in our children's section or through our epilepsy & my child links.
For those who missed this morning's training and awareness session sponsored by The Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York, PS 29 Parent Workshop Series will be holding another one on Thursday, March 11 at 12:30 PM in Room 318.

The PS29 PTA Annual Gala and Auction is quickly approaching! Tomorrow is the last day to purchase $65 tickets; tickets are $75 thereafter and will not be for sale at the door. Please also consider buying a benefactor ticket, which buys a ticket for a teacher. The PTA will have a table in the school's lobby tomorrow at drop off, if you wish to pay by check or cash. To buy online, go to: TinyURL.com/Gala29.

We have received many generous auction donations so far — click HERE for a preview — but still need more in order to achieve our fundraising goals. Deadline for auction items is this Friday, February 26th.
How can you help?
  1. Donate your talents! Offer to host a small dinner party, donate a bottle of wine from your collection, babysit, bake a cake, install a light fixture. Be creative! We know that each and every one of you has something to offer.
  2. Reach out to folks you know! Some past donations include restaurant and spa gift certificates, hotel stays, museum passes, theater or sporting events tickets, children's classes, and gift baskets of all kinds.
  3. Come help us set up on Friday, March 5th from 10 am at the Brooklyn Lyceum. Pizza lunch included!
  4. Buy your Gala tickets!
Please email ps29auction@gmail.com with questions or to volunteer. Donations may be easily uploaded directly HERE. For donation forms to print, click HERE.

Dear Parents,

We are currently producing a companion documentary to HBO's A FAMILY IS A FAMILY IS A FAMILY: A ROSIE O'DONNELL CELEBRATION.  This program, which premiered in January, is a moving portrait of American families today, featuring original songs and kids musing on love, parents,
and what it means to be in a family.

Our new program will focus on the subjects of love, divorce and stepfamilies.  Along with thoughtful interviews with young children, we are planning on featuring original songs, poems, and artwork created by kids.

We would like to invite students from PS 29, between the ages of 4 and 8, to potentially be included in our program.  We are looking for kids who are children of divorce, parental separation, or are part of a blended/stepfamily who might enjoy participating.  We would talk with kids
about families and love and ask about strategies that help them through hard
times.

Our previous family specials, including the Peabody and Emmy-winning GOODNIGHT MOON & OTHER SLEEPYTIME TALES, THE MUSIC IN ME and CLASSICAL BABY, have featured kids talking from the heart about subjects like dreams, music, poetry and love.  Our shows have been successful with parents and with children, not least because of the participation of wonderful children.

If you think that your child may want to participate, or for more information, please feel free to contact us.

Thanks so much for your generous consideration.

Thanks again for your continued support!

A couple of important notes below - please read!

There's still time for a 2009 tax-deductible donation to the PTA at TinyURL.com/29Give. It only takes a minute, and benefits over 670 children! Thank you!

Please click HERE to download the brand-new PS29 PLUS Winter 2010 After School Program Course Catalogue. Registration will take place at 6:00 PM SHARP on Wednesday, January 6, 2010. Courses start on Monday, January 11th and will run for nine weeks. PS29 PLUS is a robust on-site after-school program offering a wide range of courses, taught by our own teachers as well as professional partners such as Vision Education & Media (RoboFun Lego Robotics), The Piano School of New York, Let’s Play Chess, and Juguemos a Cantar. PS29 PLUS offers a trimester schedule, and approximately 60 courses per academic year. We're pleased to note that we've held Kids' Club prices steady for the past three years (despite increases in costs to the PTA).

The PTA is also pleased to introduce our first PS29 PLUS Holiday Camp for the Midwinter Recess, February 15-19, 2010, as a service for busy and working parents (with options to register by the day or week.)
